A romantic stay in the picturesque town of Vitorchiano enclosed by medieval walls and overlooking gorges. Since the Middle Ages it has been represented in Rome by a conestabile faithful to the city's flag and chosen for its glorious history to represent all those places that eventhough they are far from the capital contribute to enrich Rome's fame.
Locanda Sant'Agnese, a restored monastery built in 1366, is just a few steps from the house of Santa Rosa. The ancient monastery has been restored keeping its original structure and conserving the memory of the contemplative life of the virgin nuns who lived here. The rooms are perfectly done and each has its own individual look thanks to a choice of colors and furnishings, they each have a TV, safe, frigobar and air conditioning. The refined restaurant in the 14th century chapel faces the medieval cloister and proposes a delicious menu of characteristic plates accompanied by wines from a rich wine cellar
.Its strategic position gives guests the possibility of visiting different localities in a simple and autonomous way. One can choose from Etruscan necropoli or the Archeological Parks, the nature reserves or castles, abbeys located near lakes, mountains or the sea.
Some of the sites to visit are:
Monsters Park" of Bomarzo , the "Sacred Wood" created by Vicino Orsini between 1552 and 1580. The Park is composed of degrading terraces and a series of walks along which one meets monstrous figures of grotesque animals or giants excavated in the peperino stone.
-Palazzo Farnese at Caprarola: This pentagon shaped palace with its gardens is an example of late Renaissance architecture, and was done on designs of Antonio da Sangallo and Vignola.-Villa Lante in Bagnaia-done in 1578 on designs of Vignola, it began the concept of "Italian garden" and represents one of the most important Renaissance gardens and villas in central Italy.
-Lake of Vico- Formed about 700,000 years ago after the volcano of Vico exploded, the lake is 12 square kilometers and at a height of 507 meters . It is located in the center of a natural reserve that one can explore on foot or by horseback. The paths of Monte Fogliano and Venere surrounding the lake are covered by tall oaks and centuries-old beech forests . In the rich woods there are 15 types of wild orchids and fox, weasels, hares, badgers, and marmots while the lake still has some rare fur seals.
-The Terme dei Papi- Your stay can be enriched further by a pleasant "pause" relaxing in the thermal center of Viterbo (5/10 min Locanda S. Agnese) and just outside the walls of the ancient city . These baths have been known since the time of Pope Gregory IX (1235) and are mentioned in Dante's" Divine Comedy." The water's curative effects were used by the Etruscans and Roman and Pope Nicholas V, founder of the Vatican Library, had a palace built near the source . Since then they have been known as "Terme dei Papi". The principal attraction of the spa are its waters and mud, natural and efficacious remedies for the cure and prevention of cronic infections of the respiratory tract, for osteo-articolare problems and for diseases of the skin or more simply as a pleasant and relaxing aesthetic treatment.
