Villas and Castles
Day 1 Castle Odescalchi- Bracciano
Visit to Castle Orsini Odescalchi, one of
Europe's most important feudal homes. Built during the second half
of the 1400's, the castle is a delightful combination of military
and civil architecture. A walk along the lake and visit to the Botanic
Gardens of San Liberato at the San Miniatelli Odescalchi estate.
The Park, by renowned English landscape gardener, Russel Page, is
the site of a 9th century church built on the ruins of Forum Clodii
.
Day 2- Castello of Santa Severa

Departure for Santa Severa. Guided tour of the Antiquarium of Pyrgi
where objects found during the numerous archeological digs at the
nearby Caere are kept. It is known in all the world for the famous
"gold plates" that were found here in 1964. Walk along
the polygonal walls of the castrum romano (3rd century A.D.) along
the edge of the medieval village with its Roman fish pond next to
the villa of Nero's father Domizio Enobarbo. A tour of the medieval
castle and Saracen tower, the Baptistry, the 1500's church and the
artisans' workshops set up in the village. In the evening return
to hotel, dinner and overnight
Day 3-Tarquinia and Vitorchiano
Guided tour of the Etruscan necropolis of Monterozzi, famous throughout
the world for its painted tombs. Visit to the National Museum in
the ancient Palazzo Vitelleschi and a walk in the city's historic
center, surrounded by towers and castellated walls. A walk in the
historic center of Vitorchiano that since the Middle Ages has had
the privilege of being represented in Capitolium by a conestable
faithful to the city's banner and chosen for its glorious history
to represent those places that eventhough far from the capital,
have helped to enrich its fame.
Day
4- Palazzo Farnese-Caprarola and Lake of Vico
A guided visit of Palazzo Farnese (16th century) of pentagon shape
with its gardens is an example of late Renaissance architecture,
and was done on designs of Antonio da Sangallo and Vignola. A walk
along the lake side. Formed about 700,000 years ago after the volcano
of Vico exploded, the lake is 12 square kilometers and at a height
of 507 meters . It is located in the center of a natural reserve
that one can explore on food or by horseback. The paths of Monte
Fogliano and Venere surrounding the lake are covered by tall oaks
and centuries-old elms that the experts say date back to prehistoric
glacial times. There are 15 types of wild orchids in the rich woods
where animals such as fox, weasels, hares, badgers, and marmots
live. The lake still has some rare fur seals.
Day 5- Sacred Wood of Bomarzo and Villa Lante, Bagnaia

A guided tour of the Monsters' Park or Sacred Wood, built by Vicino
Orsini (1552-1580). The park is made up of a series of degrading
terraces where the walks through the woods where one meets monstrous
and grotesque figures of animals and giants carved in the masses
of peperino stone. The tour continues with a guided visit of Villa
Lante. Built in 1578 on Vignola's design , it is the prototype of
the "Italian garden" and represents one of the most important
Renaissance villas in central italy.
Day 6 The City of Popes -Viterbo
A visit to the ancient city of Viterbo with the medieval San Pellegrino
quarter, the Papal Palace, Palace
of the Priors, ancient convents and numerous churches. The historic
center is enclosed by an imposing city wall dating from the 12th
century and is rich in palaces, fountains and monuments that confirm
its glorious past as "The City of the Popes".
Extra Days- The Papal Baths
An afternoon of relax and wellness at the spa center of Viterbo
(only 10 minutes from Locanda Sant'Agnese) just outside Viterbo's
ancient walls. Pope Gregory IX (1235) went here to cure his gallstones,
the baths are also cited in Dante's "Divine Comedy". The
curative effect of the waters has been known since Etruscan and
Roman times . Pope Nicolas V, founder of the Vatican Library, ordered
a palace to be built near the baths and since then the complex has
been called "Terme dei Papi". The principal attraction
is the waters and mud baths, natural and efficacious cures for the
prevention of chronic respiratory illnesses, for bone and skin illnesses
and simply for pleasant and relaxing beauty treatments.
