Day 1 Macchiatonda Nature Reserve
Guided tour of the Park that faces the seaside with its beaches
of rich volcanic sand, protected by the outline of the Tolfa Hills,
remnants of the Tuscan-Laziale volcanic activity. Air photos and
excavation campaigns done since the 1950's prove that the area has
been intensely cultivated since the 4th century B.C. during the
Etruscan and then Roman domination. To visit it helps one realize
its importance from naturalist and historical-archeological points
of view
Day 2 The Natural Park of Monterano
A visit to the abandoned town and the nature reserve of Monterano,
one of the areas most fascinating sites. The environment , a strange
phenomenon of microclimate, in the lower areas the cold climate
allows beech and cerro-oak to grow while in the sunnier areas there
are corbezzoli, oaks, elder,poplars, willows and nut trees,holly,
mistletoe and wild orchids. Like the other Etruscan sites, there
are natural tufa rock hills, eroded at the base by three rivers:
Mignone, Bilione and Palombara. There are many burial places that
are testimony to the flourishing inhabited nucleus and the use of
the territory for the extraction of minerals. In the Roman times
the town was reduced to a small center and flourished again after
the Middle Ages. Then the area was dominated by powerful families
and religious orders which characterized the area until its final
destruction
Day 3 Marturanum Regional Park
In the morning a guided visit of the park that protects 1450 hectares
of territory including some important carved rock necropoli. One
of these ,Castel San Giuliano, has tombs dating from The last visit
is to the necroplis of Blera where rich foilage hides tombs dating
from the 7th to 5th century B.C.
