The Great Civilizations of the Past

Day 1-The Painted Tombs-Tarquinia

Guided visit of the Etruscan necropolis of Monterozzi, unique in the world for its painted tombs. The archeological area extends for over 750 hectares and is made up of over 7,000 tombs (58 of which are still frescoed ) of the ipogea type carved in the calcareous rock.. A visit to the National Museum situated in the ancient Palazzo Vitelleschi and a walk through the city's historic center.

Day 2- The Tomba della Regina-Tuscania

Guided tour of the archeological Museum located in the convent of S. Maria del Riposo, with itsmedieval cloister decorated by 48 frescoed lunettes showing the life of St. Francis of Assisi. The museum has four exhition rooms on the ground floor and eight on the upper floor. Guided tour of the Madonna dell'Olivo necropolis known throughout the world for its Grotto della Regina. This ipogeo tomb , mentioned by George Dennis who visited in 1842, goes back to the Hellenistic age and besides its steep, long dromos and the main room of an irregular shape there are mysterious tunnels that suggest that it was more than a noble tomb, perhaps a rich and famous sanctuary.

Day 3- The Archeological Park of Vulci

Guided visit of the Archeological Park of the Etruscan town of Velx that existed on the right bank of the Fiora river, near the sea. The city had its maximum splendor in the 6th century B.C. and in the 2nd it fell under Rome. Recent excavations have brought many burials to light such as the famous FRANCOIS tomb. The main findings are conserved in the National Museum set up in the Castello della Badia that overlooks the valley

Day 4- The Great Tumulus -Cerveteri

Visit to the Banditaccia Necropolis notable for burials by incineration, monumental tumulus set along the funeral roads, also numerous tombs "a camera" carved into the tufo rock.
A tour of the National Museum set up in the medieval Rocca in the center of the ancient town with the Romanesque church of Santa Maria that gives its name to the square and the passeggiata of the historic center

Day 5 - The ancient port of Pyrgi and the Taurine Baths- Santa Severa

VA guided visit of the Antiquarium of Pyrgi where objects found during the numerous archeological digs at the Etruscan market of Caere are kept. It is known in all the world for the famous "gold plates" that were found here in 1964. Walk along the polygonal walls of the Roman castrum (3rd century B.C.) the medieval village with its Roman fish pond next to the remains of the villa of Nero's father, Domizio Enobarba. Guided tour of the medieval castle , the Saracen tower, the Baptistry, the 1500’s church complexes and the artisans' workshops set up inside the village.
A visit to the Taurine baths, built in the 2nd century A.D. near a source of hot, therapeutic waters that still are used today. These are among the most important archeological complex of Roman times present in Etruria. The structure, thanks to its size and excellent preservation, represents a typical example of Roman thermal architecture between the Republican and Imperial ages.

Day 6 Villa Giulia - Rome

A guided visit of the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia. The completely renewed museum setup is a perfect final stop of our tour dedicated to the Etruscans . At Villa Giulia the richest and most important finds are kept: from the origins of the civilization to its decadence, funerary objects, gold jewellery and an important section concerning the mysteries of the Etruscan language
