Day 1- Castro


Guided tour of the dead city of Castro. The nucleus of the first medieval city was restored by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, on commission of the Farnese who made it their dukedom from 1537 to 1649. The flouishing city of Castro was destroyed completely by command of Pope Innocent X. Nowadays the ruins of the city are covered by a thick woods with remains of the fortifications, the cathedral of St. Savino, the pavements of the major piazzas and parts of the surrounding buildings such as the mint, the tavern, the private houses the cisterns and cantinas. After the visit, arrival to the agriturismo, room assignments , dinner and overnight

Day 2 Along the Fiora

A guided visit to the Hermitage of Poggio Conte, a where medieval hermitage complex where hermit monks lived. The Poggio is located in the enchanting landscape of the Fiora river, a short way from the Agriturismo farmhouse that will provide us with a picnic lunch. A visit to the Museum at Ischia di Castro where funerary objects from the Etruscan necropolis are kept and a walk in the historic center of Farnese , set upon a tufo cliff not far from the ruins of Castro and the Tuscan border. In the evening, return to the agriturismo , dinner and overnight

Day 3 The Selva del Lamone

A guided visit of the ancient town of Valentano that was restored by Pier Luigi Farnese and is overlooked by the monumental Rocca. The territory is marked with hills and plains and is known for the numerous archeological remains from the middle and high Paleolithic period. Today it is known as as the Selva del Lamone and is considered an extraordinary cradle of ancient civilization, still to be explored.
