Day 1 The Villas of the Castelli Romani

Guided tour of Villas Torlonia, Falconieri and Aldobrandini, marvelous examples of arhcitecture by architects such as Maderno, Fontana and Della Porta. The Castelli Romani have always been a rich and fascinating territory that entice visitors from all over the world. The area takes in the large volcano and its surroundings from Frascati to Artena, from Montecompatri to Lanuvio. Between the 16th and 17th centuries this natural scenery enclosed in the hills near Frascati was chosen by illustrous Roman families for building residential villas. A visit also to the Abbey of San Nilo in Grottaferrata.


Day 2-Castle of Bracciano

Visit of the Orsini Odescalchi castle, one of the most important feudal homes in all Europe. It was begun in the second half of the 1400's and represents an ideal encounter between military and civil architecture. Notable are the stucco works attributed to Taddeo Zuccari, the Arms Hall, that of the Caesars and of the Triptych. Another visit is to the San Liberato Gardens in the San Miniatelli Odescalchi estate. The park , by noted landscape designer Russel Page, holds the Romanesque church of Saint Eponimo (9th century) built on the ruins of Forum Clodii.

Day 3-Castle of Santa Severa

Guided tour of the Etruscan Antiquarium which holds some of the findings from numerous excavations . In 1964 the famous "gold plates" of Pyrgi with Etruscan inscriptions were discovered here. A walk along the polygonal walls of the Roman castrum (3rd century) just outside the walls of the medieval village. Visit to the Roman fish pond next to the remains of Nero's father, Domizio Enobarbo's villa.. Guided visit of the Castle with its Saracen tower, baptistry, 1500's church and the workshops of artisans within the village.
