Renaissance Villages, Manors and Villas


Day 1 The Sacred Wood -Bomarzo

Guided visit to the "Monsters Park" constructed by Vicino Orsini (1552-1580) . The park is made up ofa series of degrading terraces and walks through the woods along which one meets monstrous and grotesque figures of animals and giants excavated in the peperino masses.


Day 2 Villa Lante and Palazzo Farnese -Caprarola and Bagnaia

A guided visit to the park of Villa Lante , made in 1578 on a design of Vignola who began the idea of the Italian garden. It represents one of the most important Renaissance gardens of central Italy. At the tour's end we leave for Caprarola. Guided visit to Palazzo Farnese (16th century) The pentagon-shaped building is an admirable example of late Renaissance architecture, a collaboration between Antonio da Sangallo and Vignola. Walk along the Lake of Vico, a 12 square km. lake over 500 meters above sea level. The trails of Monte Fogliano and Monte Venere surrounding the lake are covered with beech and centuries-old elms . Animals living in the rich woods include fox, rabbit, weasels,badgers, and marmots.

Day 3 Odescalchi Castle , Bracciano

A visit to the Orsini Odescalchi castle, one of the most important feudal homes of all Europe. Built during the second half of the 1400's, the construction is an ideal combination of military and civil architecture. Notable are the stuccos by Taddeo Zuccari , the Weapons Room, the room of the Cesars and the triptych room on the main floor. There follows a visit to the Gardens of San Liberato, in the San Miniatelli Odescalchi estate. The park, designed by Russel Page the well known English landscape gardener, includes a Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Eponimo (11th century) that was built on the ruins of the Forum Clodii.


Day 4 The Castle of Santa Severa
Guided visit of the Etruscan Antiquarium where some of the most important materials found during the numerous excavation campaigns are exhibited. Not to be forgotten are the famous "Gold Plates" found in 1964 near the sacred area of Pyrgi. A walk along the polygonal walls of the castrum romano (3rd century D.C.) just outside the walls of the medieval village. Visit to the Roman fish pond next to the villa of Nero's father, Domizio Enobarbo. A guided tour of the Castle with its Saracen tower, the Baptistry, the 15th century church and the artisans' workshops within the village.

Day 5 -Ville Torlonia, Falconieri, Aldobrandini -Castelli Romani
Guided visits of the Torlonia, Falconieri and Aldobrandini villas, marvelous examples of architecture by famous architects such as Maderno, Fontana and Della Porta. Between the 16th and 17th centuries the natural scenery among the hills of Frascati was chosen by Rome's most important families for their villa residences. Trasfer to Grottaferrata and visit to the Abbey of San Nilo.


Day 6 The Renaissance alum mines- Mountains of Tolfa

Guided visit of the Civic Archeological Museum and the ancient Renaissance alum mines, built for Agostino Chigi in the centuries-old wood known as the Faggeta.
